Siberian cats, also called Siberian Forest cats or Moscow Longhairs, are a medium to large semi-longhair breed with males ranging from 15 to 20 pounds and females only slightly smaller.
They are strong, alert, and adventurous with lustrous coats and round, curious eyes. Siberians are a land-race breed, meaning they developed over time by adapting to their surroundings – which explains the thick coats needed to face those harsh Russian winters!
Because of their easygoing personalities and relatively low maintenance, they make great additions to active households full of kids and other furry family members. (copied from https://www.aspcapetinsurance.com/resources/siberian-cat-facts/ )
Siberian cats are an active and playful breed, enjoying games like fetch and learning tricks that stimulate them mentally. Their athleticism allows them to climb and perch themselves from the highest heights. Siberian cats are bold and love to play with water and get along well with other pets and children. Feline salivary, anal, and sebaceous glands emanate about ten different allergens, but most humans react to Fel d 1. In a study conducted on kids and adults suffering from cat allergies, over 94% of the participants experienced sensitivity to Fel d 1 and not the other cat allergens (like Fel d 2, Fel d 3, and Fel d 4).
The genes Ch1 and Ch2 in felines are responsible for making Fel d 1. Siberian cats are sometimes classified as hypoallergenic cats because their Ch1 and Ch2 genes have mutated considerably to produce a negligible amount of Fel d 1. Keep in mind that a hypoallergenic kitty only means a low-level allergenic cat—as it’s impossible to eliminate all the allergens they release. Siberian cats are generally healthy, especially females, with an average lifespan of 10 to 18 years. With proper care and diet, these kitties can easily live longer.
Unfortunately, even the most resilient breeds are not immune to some genetic diseases and disorders.
Here is what to watch out for: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), polycystic kidney disease (PKD), hereditary cancer, Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), Gum disease. (copied from https://www.untamedcatfood.com/blogs/cat-breeds/siberian-cat-health-issues)
Owning a Siberian cat is considered by some a form of investment. The hefty price tag usually starts at $1,200 and can skyrocket up to a whopping $4000 per kitten.
So, why are Siberian cats so expensive?
This Siberian native breed commands a high price tag due to several factors, including high demand and low supply on top of breeding, registration, vaccination, and homing expenses.
Outside of their native Russia, Siberian kitties are considered rare. It is pretty hard and complex to look for a reputable breeder (TICA-certified Siberian Breeders in the US, Canada).
Responsible Siberian breeders usually set out high prices for healthy kittens in the cat market because there are a lot of processes and expenses that need to be undergone in raising purebred Siberian kittens with full registration.
Siberian cats are the national cat of Russia and have only just arrived in the United States around 1990.
They are incredibly expensive to import which makes them relatively rare outside of Europe. Despite that, the breed is immensely popular among cat fancier and breeder organizations.
Compounding the dilemma of low supply, cat lovers around the world are clamoring to own Siberian cats because of the breed’s undeniable majestic attributes with the rare and exotic status.
The demand is insanely high that many catteries and breeders have long wait lists for cat lovers attempting to own this ancient breed. (copied from https://oxfordpets.com/why-are-siberian-cats-so-expensive/)
